Our neighborhood is quirky, this is no lie. The household that has painted their garage door as if it were a library, however, brings it to a new level.
This place makes me smile, though. I wonder who lives in there? I would like to chat with them some day.
I chose this because I have books, books, books on the mind today. My trip to Oklahoma threw me all off my reading schedule so I'm weeks late on starting this month's book club selection. I did start and finish Anne Rice's new spiritual autobiography, Called Out of Darkness last week. It was not at all what I expected.
While I find her path from strict Catholicism to atheism and back pretty fascinating, I guess the book didn't have the detail I was yearning for from her. Her brief few pages on her contemporaries reaction to her success as well as her own thoughts on her stories and characters were the best part of this quick read. I know that was sort of a sideline to the goal of this new book, but I would have been happier with much more of that.
She has very interesting things to say about the deep divide in The Church over gender roles. Since this is also a subject I have become interested in, I liked hearing her perspective. It seemed less jammed full of emotional and spiritual baggage than any arguments you normally hear, since she had stepped away from these discussions for nearly forty years.
A fun tidbit: Did you know her given name is not in fact Anne but Howard Allen? She was called Howard Allen until she was school age and informed the nun that her name was Anne, which she appeared to have made up on the spot. She describes herself multiple times as feeling "deeply ambivalent about gender," I wonder if this is even in part a source of that?
This paragraph sums up what I found most interesting about the book:
When I finally raced to the bookstore to buy A Winter's Tale for book club, I also picked up Interview With The Vampire for a re-read.
Happy Sunday and Happy Reading!
