It's a bit of a gimme today, but:
I am eternally grateful for those who have served our country at any time. I am grateful for my brother's service in Iraq, and especially grateful that he was brought home to us.
I believe that my brother's deployment to Iraq in 2006 shook up our family forever. When your dear loved one is in daily danger, it really forces you to decide how you feel about war and peace and the ultimate protection. "Support The Troops" and "Freedom Isn't Free" becomes almost insulting as bumper sticker slogans because the sentiments behind them are now engraved on your heart.
These are pictures from the day my brother arrived home from his year deployment, and meeting his 4 month old son for the first time.
I was lucky and got a sneak preview. He landed in California before he went home on his return to the States, so I drove out to the desert for an emotional hug. I can tell from this picture exactly how we were both feeling. It was his birthday.

Can't think of anything to add, but yes. So, so grateful.

Yes. It is rare that in a moment of unspeakable gratitutde you are aware enough to capture it. These pictures are precious.

I tried to reach out to all of my veterans yesterday to personally say thank you. It's a little awkward to do it live, and part of me is crossing my fingers for the answering machine. But without fail their response is so humble. It is inspiring. I don't have Lance's contact info, but I'm sure he religiously reads the responses to your blog (ha.) Send him my best. One day late.
