This must be documentary day.
I was getting ready in the bathroom when I heard Daniel Johnston's Devil Town on the tv. Since Daniel isn't exactly mainstream, I ran in to see what it was playing over. Turns out it was a promo for the new season of Friday Night Lights, and after a little internet searching, I found out the song was used in the season 1 finale.
My music-savvy husband turned me on to Daniel Johnston, since he's been a fan of this strange Austin musician for a long time. When you first hear him, you're a little turned off. But then it kind of sticks with you. It hangs with you. And after you know Daniel's story, you're even more intrigued.
My absolute favorites are "Some Things Last a Long Time" and "Go."
But the thing I really recommend to people who aren't familiar with the music is the documentary. The Devil and Daniel Johnston is, like Murderball, one of my very favorites. This one isn't heartbreaking-yet-hopeful. It's...hard. But so good. And of course the music is great.
I don't watch Friday Night Lights, and this isn't even Daniel singing. But it's a great song. This is one of those rare instances where the music alone is making me want to watch this show. Like Scrubs. Or Greys. I read the Friday Night Lights book when I was much younger, and I liked the movie just because small-town football stories appeal to me. Obviously.

Speaking of Friday Night Lights....a little bit of trivia for you since you read the book. My cousin Melanie who is my dad's brother's oldest, married Don Billingsley. Don was a "character" in the book and in the movie that came out a few years ago (before the TV adaptation). He was on that actual Texas high school team the book and movie and everything else was based on. He was the one that kept dropping the football in big games and had the abusive dad.....all true by the way. His real-life perspective on all of that is very interesting. He's a really wonderful guy and a great husband and father now.
Anyway, just wanted to share!
