We're home again after a whirlwind 48 hours in the Carolinas. I don't mind traveling, and I do it enough to have all kinds of little habits, but flying from coast to coast like that is exhausting. Five plus hours on the plane, not to mention getting to the airport two hours early, standing barefoot in the security line, it's all so draining. And now, in addition to charging for checked bags, some airlines are charging for beverages on the flight! So if you don't have a couple of bucks on you, too bad. Parched. Drink the water in the bathroom or something.
All day Saturday and most of Sunday we were in an area without televisions or cell reception. So we heard the news of the Columbia plane crash third-hand. A miracle there were any survivors. And this morning I saw this news about Dominick Dunne. I am a fan of Dominick Dunn. I wish I had his job. Just yesterday I was reading the Vanity Fair article recapping his last twenty-five years with the magazine and was interested to learn that he started his writing career in his fifties!
And, while I promise not to link to her every week, Peggy Noonan's current column, especially her final point, reflects how I'm feeling about the election these days. If you're not a big political column reader, just scroll to the bottom. A few paragraphs from the end starts with "A final point." This election is exciting and fun to watch. In almost the same way as one of the celebrity trials covered by Dominick Dunne.

"I wonder if we follow the election so passionately because we're afraid. We're afraid a lot of our national problems are intractable, and the future too full of challenge."
Yes. Definitely. Great column - thanks for the link!
